Abstract Downton Abbey shows the life change of English aristocracy and their servants before and after the first World War。 With the fluctuating plots, the story brings people into thinking woman’s status, right, and gift, and expresses consciously and clearly feminism。 This paper generalizes Downton Abbey at first, illustrates the concept of feminism。 On this basis, using close-reading method, the paper analyzes feminism revealed by different roles, studies the influence of feminism on their status and ideology, eulogizes women in Downton Abbey who pursuit independence, equality and freedom bravely。

An Analysis of Feminism in Downton Abbey —from Role Perspective

    Downton Abbey is a British TV series, produced by Julian Fellowes and directed by Carnival。 Its first broadcast is on ITV in the British on September 26 2010 and on PBS in the British on January 9 2011。 As a part of the masterwork anthology, Downton Abbey is a world-famous TV series。 It is said that Downton Abbey is another masterpiece to reflect the English community after Pride and Prejudice。 The TV series is focusing on “Abbey”, describes the aristocratic lifestyle in British society at that time from a distinctive angle。 This TV series has attracted a lot of audiences since the Downton Abbey was on the air。 In the survey of 2012, this TV is more popular than a lot of British series and gradually becomes the most popular British series。 In the past four years, there are ten-billion audiences watching this TV series every year。 论文网

    At the beginning, this TV series is easy to be associated with the classical plays, such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma, South and North and so on。 If Downton Abbey was directed in traditional ways, it won’t have such a success。 Secondly, Downton Abbey is not British Empresses in Palace, because it won’t express intrigue, warped values, and won’t describe drastic class conflict。 Downton Abbey shows time from old era to a new era。 Because Downton Abbey just comes out more than three years, there are little researches on this TV series。 Among these studies, some researchers are aware of feminism。 Though only Edith and Sybil bravely pursue the woman’s rights, woman in Downton Abbey all expresses implicatively their feminism。 Comparing Downton Abbey with Pride and Prejudice, Shen Lin finds out a lot of common points which are the creation of feminism。 (29) Zheng Yun thinks that the feminism of Sybil meets resistance in drama (10)。 Yang Yao analyzes the characters of three sisters in Downton Abbey from the perspective post-colonialism (34)。 As a famous TV series, it has its uniqueness。 From character’s costume to story line, the TV series reflects the historical background of English and the aristocratic culture of Britain。 The women living in Downton Abbey all have their unique personality。 Downton Abbey involves two events which are Industrial Revolution and World War I。 Obviously, these events have great influence on British。 What’s the influence on the women of that time?
