ABSTRACT At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century under Queen Victoria, one's language indicated his/her social position. Standard language represents not only knowledge, but also status and power. It represents the privilege and superiority over/in the upper class. We often use language to express our ideas, emotions, and requirements. We can make a research on what social factors influence or govern our language. Therefore, to grasp the impact on social context is of great help for us to comprehend and use language.
The thesis uses the approaches of documentary research and case analysis to expound the relations between speech acts and social cultural factors, which will be conducive to the understanding and appropriate use of language. It will make an in-depth study of the influence of social factors on language. It will focus on one’s social identity, cultural identity and sexual identity. The author has collected a great number of relevant documents and studied the subject systematically. This paper analyses the speech acts of the main characters in the film and sums up their language features. The results prove that the social cultural environment can affect the speech act of a person. From the film My Fair Lady, we can realize that the great influence of social status on people’s life, especially their language and we can define a person from his speech acts. Some of these reasons may be put down to different social cultural factors like age, gender, upbringing, etc. Language can only be accepted correctly and learned well in a certain social context. And language behavior is a typical social phenomenon. It is also a social activity based on a specific environment.46182
