AbstractAmy Tan is a famous contemporary Chinese American writer. She has taken animportant part in the Chinese American literature. After publishing her first novel, TheJoy Club, she has received wide attention both home and abroad. The Kitchen God’ sWife is Amy Tan’s second novel. As a female Chinese American writer, she is “theother” for the American mainstream culture as well as the male-dominated literaryworld. The double marginalities endow Amy Tan’s works with unique features offeminism. However, the male images in the novel are almost absent from critics’discussion. This thesis focuses on analyzing the two main male images in The KitchenGod’ s Wife to dig out the author’s motive of creating the male images and theenlightenment of such kind of male images, which mainly includes the way toestablish the unique cultural identity for Chinese Americans in American society.41426

Chapter One Introduction1.1 Research BackgroundAmong the Chinese American writers, female writers deserve researchingparticularly. Amy Tan, a typical Chinese American female writer, insists on theChinese model and American value and focus on the relationship between mother anddaughter, striking the American society and creating a literature with perpetualhistorical meanings and commercial values. On the publication of Amy Tan’s firstnovel, The Joy Luck Club (1989), she earns her name in the literature field and thenovel becomes favored children for critics and readers. While for her second novel,The Kitchen God’ s Wife (1991), the number of researches related to which is smallerthan its predecessor.
1.2 Literature ReviewAmy Tan’s novels depict mostly the conflicts, communication andreconciliation between mother and daughter, unveiling the real life of the twogenerations of Chinese Americans with totally different values. Western scholarsmainly focus on the ideology, feminism and ethnic identity like Amy Tan: Author ofThe Joy Luck Club(Kramer, Barbara,1996) and Amy Tan: A CriticalCompanion(Huntley, E,1990). Domestically, studies in Amy Tan’s novels can bepided into comprehensive study and studies targeting at one perspective such asculture, post-colonialism, feminist, narratology and Chinese mystery imagery. In 1990s, there are only 18 articles of related studies on male images in Amy Tan’s novel.In 2003, Wang Guanglin published “Remodeling Chinese Male Image of Masculine” ,indicating the Chinese American male writers’ feeling of the Western discourse in theChinese men. Zhang Limin’s “The Chinese Male Images in Amy Tan’s Works” (2011)analyzes the male characters in two novels The Bonesetter’ s Daughter and The JoyLuck Club to analyze separately from the perspective of “Yellow Peril” in mainstreamAmerican society, American exclusion policy and Tan who has a double cultureidentity to investigate the reason for appearance of stereotyped male image. Xu Danand Cheng Zhouli’s “The Hideous Other, Abortive Me -- An Interpretation of ChineseMale Image in The Joy Luck Club” (2011) dissects the features of Chinese maleimages. Wang Yu published “The Fate of Male Characters in the Chinese AmericanLiterary—taking The Bonesetter’s Daughter as an example”(2013) compares the maleimages from Chinese and American novels to explore the relationship betweendifferent fates. In conclusion, there are few studies on male images and thecomparison between Chinese and American male images in Tan’s works. In addition,scholars pay less attention to the male images in The Kitchen God’ s Wife.
