I. Introduction

The Scarlet Letter written by American romantic novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne in the 19th tells a tragic love story. It reveals the cruelty of the social code, religious deception and moral hypocrisy in colonial times. It is obvious that symbolism is one of the most prominent features in the Scarlet Letter. There are two obvious places where the author has used symbolism. The first is the symbolic meanings of several characters: Hester Prynne, Pearl, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth. And the second is the symbolic meanings of three settings and some time words: the scaffold, light and darkness, the mansion and the garden of Governor Bellingham, the day and the night and the meteor. These words which have been chosen have their special meanings. Through the analysis of symbolism, we will understand this ingenious writing skill used by the author better. It will be of great help for the expression of the theme of the novel and the psychological reaction of the main characters. But every coin has two sides. There is a good side and also a bad side. So some symbolic meanings should not be simply confined to a certain layer and need to leave some room for readers to imagine.

II. Introduction to Symbolism

Symbolism originated in France in the mid-19th century and then spread to other European countries in the 1920s. It is one of the earliest schools of European and American modernist literature. Symbolism has two definitions in the dictionary. One is a system of literature and art especially in the 19th century in France, in which symbols were used to represent real things, feelings etc; the second means the usage of symbols. It is based on a link between things. It is related to symbols. Through some specific things’ description, the conception and inner world of spirit can be expressed. 《红字》中的象征主义:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_39139.html
