摘要委婉语是一种语言现象，是人们在一定的场合用来交际的一种重要的手段，通常情况人们尽量不使用让对方不愉快或者会破坏双方关系的语言，而是用一种迂回曲折的语言来交流。委婉语是存在于各种文化的一种表达方式。委婉语是各个国家、各个时代都会用到的一种表达手段，同时委婉语也跟随时代的进步而不断地发展着。委婉语的言语表达是传统委婉语中主要研究的对象，现代委婉语的研究也包括非言语委婉语表达。本文从四个方面来对比英汉委婉语，指出了二者的差异。33941

Title A Comparative Study of English & Chinese
Abstract
Euphemism is an expression method adopted by all of the countries in all eras, developing continuously with the progress of human society. High development of modern civilization, along with the felt need of social networks accordingly has been driving the development of euphemism. Euphemism is a kind of expression that exists in every culture. Verbal expression is always researched in the traditional study of Euphemism. But our study of Euphemism should also include nonverbal expressions. The author makes a comparative study of English and Chinese euphemism in four parts, pointing out their differences and convergence.

1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Euphemism is an expression method adopted by all of the countries in all eras, developing continuously with the progress of human society. High development of modern civilization, along with the felt need of social networks accordingly has been driving the development of euphemism. With a greater usage frequency and a larger applied range, euphemism is multiplying at an unprecedented rate and related to all aspects of the social and personal life. Euphemism is more than limited in our forefathers’ vocabulary list. However, people have tended to come to a deadlock if we don’t use euphemism since our generation (Wu,1999). Yet the other American scholar pointed out that no one—including people who boast of their speaking straight from the shoulder—can spend a day without euphemism (Liu,1994).
Comparing to the actual life in which euphemism is widely used. Theoretical study of euphemism is still limited. Meanwhile, study of the definition, range and research approach of euphemism still exists a lot of problems. Xu Liejiong once said: “There is something called tension existing between the theory and fact of euphemism, which is the very driving force of scientific development” (Xu,1997). It is accepted in general scientific fields, linguistic science as well. It is the strong tension existing between the theory and fact of euphemism that shows a further research subject of euphemism should be put into effect in both depth and breadth; Of this, the comparative study of English and Chinese euphemisms is an imperative research subject. The reason is that although euphemism is universal. Different nations’ euphemism has their own particularities. However, so for domestic and international researchers to euphemism subject are mainly concentrated on several kinds of language.
