Abstract
The Catcher in the Rye is a great novel by Salinger, one of the famous American writers. It tells a story of a student named Holden who was expelled from school and wondered around in New York for nearly three days, vividly reflects the American young generation’s psychological anxiety and struggle after World War II. The Catcher in the Rye describes the experience of the hero who wandered around New York in one day and two nights, and illustrates the material life is very superior in modern American society with all sorts of subtle relationships. The novel also describes the protagonist who was in emotional distress, psychological trauma and loneliness of life, and people was in the interact of contradictions and conflicts. Holden is not only the speaker of his time, but also a pitiful victim of the social alienation. Since the book had been published in 1951, it has been the focus point of debate and became a popular work around young readers.
By reading The Catcher in the Rye, and analyzing the procession of Holden’s fighting to hypocrisy, pursuing for beauty and being obedient to social reality, we would understand American young generation’s loneliness, confusion and pain after World War II, and get deep understanding for Salinger’s critique of the social reality at his time.
The paper falls into six parts. The first part serves as an introduction, the second part aims at analyzing Holden’s living environment, the third part mainly analyzes the hero’s struggle of self-esteem, pursuit love and the ideality, the fourth part aims to analyze the background of social reality, the fifth part functions as a conclusion.
