Most of Salinger’s time during the war was spent in counter intelligence team which was affiliated to the 4th infantry pision. On Normandy landing day, 5 hours after the attack, Salinger went from Utah beach to land. In the winter of 1944, he participated in the battle of Huertgen and the battle of Hulge. Meanwhile, the process of the liberation of Europe was the most vicious fight that Salinger had ever experienced. The 4th infantry pision was suffered great losses, Salinger had said in his letter that he was also traumatized. During the attack on Berlin, he attended the battle and insisted for 11 months without rest. Although he is only 16 years old, but stands head and shoulders above others compared to the average man. After being expelled from the school for his poor academic performance, Holden packs up and leaves the school in the middle of the night after a physical altercation with his roommate. He takes a train to New York but does not want to return to his family and instead checks into the dilapidated Edmont Hotel.
