“Remember what should be remembered, and forget what should be forgotten。 Alter what is changeable, and accept what is mutable。” This sentence comes from the famous long novel The Catcher in the Rye and the writer Salinger was an idol of generations of Americans especially the youth。 Salinger also represented the writers of 1950s。 However, few people knew about his short stories Nine Stories, a collection of nine short stories which includes the most famous two --- A Perfect Day for Bananafish and For Esmé---with Love and Squalor。 Salinger is a strange person。 When the world was calling Salinger's name, he was not pleased with himself and got mad at his readers, so he lived in mountain forests to avoid the noise from society。 What’s more, he even built a high wall to make sure that he wouldn’t be interrupted so that he can concentrate on writing。 However, people outside were confused and wanted to know the reasons why he did not like communicating with others and why he moved away from the bustling metropolis。

In China, however, there are few people pay attention to his short stories, and there is little information for reference。 Nine Stories was published in 1953, later than the time when the Catcher in the Rye was published。 It begins with an example of Zen: we know the sound of clapping by two hands。 But what is the sound of clapping by only one hand? It is difficult for us to understand but it can help us to break the conventions and think differently。
