An Analysis of Postmodernism Characteristics in White Noise

Abstract White Noise, by American postmodern novelist, Don Delillo, artistically presents the lives of characters in early 1980s postmodern America. This novel uses a “copy” skill, reflecting the complicated scene in contemporary American society, all of which allow us to see life in the postmodern Americans suffering from both physical and spiritual “cancer”. These reproduce the post industrial era American society. This paper mainly analyses the novel reflecting postmodernism characteristics from four parts. First part is the introduction of the novel White Noise, and the theme in the novel; the second part focuses on fear of death of three members of the family and their funny rebellion against the fear; the third part deals with the reasons for the characters’ fear of death reflected in White Noise including consumer culture, mass media and the loss of faith; the last part is conclusion. People who try to use consumerism, mass media and religion as temporary buffers towards the fear of death encounter the spiritual emptiness and loss of true self. These all exacerbate people’s anxiety of fear of death in postmodern American society. They are unable to fight against chaos and absurdity in contemporary society, ultimately only lost in it.
Key words: White Noise; fear of death; the loss of faith; mass media

I. Introduction
Don DeLillo is one of the leading figures of postmodernism literary not only in contemporary America, but also around the world(360). After his publication of his eighth novel White Noise, Don Delillo has become more and more popular, widening his audience and earning his place among the academic circles. He tries to focus on an ordinary American family in White Noise, especially through the character Jack Gladney, and attempts to probe people’s state of mind in the postmodern American society.
Since its publication, White Noise has drawn great critical attention. Large numbers of researches have been done both at home and abroad in the past few decades.
