Abstract  Family culture is the core of the research of cultural values, it plays an important role in guiding the behavior of family members. Family is the basic unit of society as well as the epitome of socio-economic pattern. That’s to say the values of a society as a whole depend largely on family culture, so the importance of family culture is obvious. Through the analysis of differences between Chinese and American family culture, we can learn family culture differences between China and America and reasons for the differences, so that we can gain a little beneficial enlightenment and improve the understanding and appreciation ability of family culture. A brief study of the differences between Chinese and American family culture is necessary to avoid culture shock so as to enhance the communication between two peoples.

Differences between Chinese and American Family Culture
I. Introduction
    With the development of globalization, cultural exchanges between China and America become more and more frequent. As China and America have different history, cultural backgrounds as well as religions, they have developed different family culture. Family is the epitome of socio-economic pattern, and it is the basic unit of society. That’s to say the values of a society as a whole depend largely on family culture, so the importance of family culture is obvious. When people think about the definition of family, they usually say something about feeling connected because they share the same views of the world. While some family members may differ on views of some topics, most family members keep the largest, most influential, beliefs intact. So when it comes to the study of differences of family culture between two nations with completely different values and cultures , it is very complicated for us to analysis .
This paper tries to make a contrastive study between family values in China and America, including family education, marriage, and filial piety, as well as an analysis of the reasons for the differences. It is beneficial to improve capabilities in cross-cultural communication. With the current development of economic and cultural globalization,  the research can undoubtedly help people’s further understanding of other country’s family values; therefore, avoid communication errors generated in the process. All in all, the study has profound significance in cross-cultural communication.
 Owing to the differences of cultural values, there are remarkable differences between Chinese and American family values. Chinese people used to live in a big family with several generations, although the number of big families is decreasing rapidly at present, the relationship of the family member still remains. Chinese people have stiff hierarchy in which they know their position and the rules for behavior in the situation. Especially they show their high respect on the seniority and attach importance on filial piety. On the contrary, Americans value independence, equality and personal right a lot. In American families, parents and children can be good friends, and they respect with each other.
