A Comparative Analysis of Translator’s Feminist Perspective in Two Translations of Sister Carrie

Abstract    Feminism or feminist comes from the Western female right movement。 It aims at struggling equality for females who stay at the fringe area of voice and power with the males。 For many years, feminism developed successfully。 More and more relevant theories came into beings on the foundation of feminism like Eco Feminism。86955

We will discuss one of the new theories---feminist translation。 Feminism has great effects on translations。 Feminism redefines the relationship between the original text and the translations。 Feminism thinks the differences between the females and males are relative。 The relation between them must be a continuous entirety。 They are not the South Pole and the North Pole。 Translations and original texts must be an entirety。 The applications of feminism in translations win more respect for women by describing them with positive vocabularies。 

We analyze the classical American novel we have chosen—Sister Carrie。 Sister Carrie is one of the most great novels in American history。 It is a book which emphasizes on the growth and the equality of women。 

We will find two translations which are the most characteristic and representative translations to try to find the effects of feminism in different translations of the same novel。 

    We will then compare the two translations from three aspects: negative and positive attitudes to Carrie, commendatory term and derogatory term, ellipsis and delete。 Finally, we find that the applications of feminism on the translations will affect the images of females, and finally affect the attitudes to the women in the real life。

译者的女性主义视角—《嘉丽妹妹》的译本对比分析

摘  要女性主义兴起于西方女权运动，目的是为了处于话语权边缘地区的女性，争取和男性的平等地位。多年来，女性主义发展如火如荼，在女性主义的基础上衍生出了很多的相关理论，比如生态女性主义。

我们要讨论的是翻译女性主义。女性主义在翻译方面有着很大的影响。女性主义重新定位原作与译作的关系。女性主义认为，男女的差异是相对的，他们的关系应该是一个连续的整体，而不是截然相反且完全不同的两极。翻译与原作之间也应是一个连续体。女性主义应用在翻译里面，可以通过对女性形象进行美化描写，而给女性赢得尊重。

我们将选取美国经典小说《嘉丽妹妹》进行分析。《嘉丽妹妹》是美国史上最伟大的小说之一。这本书着重讲述的是女性的成长和平等。

此次将选取这本小说中，一个重点阐述女性主义思想的最具特色和代表性的译本，和另一本普通译本，来探讨女性主义在翻译方面的影响。经过以下三个方面：对于嘉丽的正面描写和反面描写，褒义词和贬义词的应用，省略和删除的对比。最后，我们发现，女性主义在译本中的应用会影响读者对于女性角色的印象，从而影响在现实生活中对于女性的态度。
