All of the scholars have presented their points of view clearly with reasonable supporting details。 And from above, we know that there are many aspects of analysis of a target。 I am really interested in the author’s successful application of the irony in Pride and Prejudicee。 Therefore, I would like choose to analyze the use of irony in Pride and Prejudicee within a dialectic point of view and the reason of her dialectically ironic art of language。 An analysis of her novel in the ironic writing style will help to have a deeper understanding of the novel as well as Jane Austen’s characteristics。

1。2 Background and Significance

Jane Austen (1775-1817), an early 19th century woman writer, has been acknowledged as a great classic novelist in both British and World literature after a nearly-two-century test and critique。Jane Austen who started writing, as a tool for entertaining her family members is now considered as one of the greatest representives in English literature。 Born in 1775, in a small town in southwest England where she spent most of her life, Austen was the seventh child of a middle class family。 Thus, Jane and her siblings were raised according to the rules of middle class。 Her father was an intellectual and sensitive man who encouraged all his children in their love of reading and writing。 Her mother was also known as a woman who was talented in producing literary works such as poems and short stories。 Indeed, writing for the whole Austen family was a way of entertainment。 Thus, Jane Austen began to write consistently to amuse her relatives。 

Jane Austen is considered significant in the irony convention because she reflects the condition of middle class women in an animate way in her novels。 She writes as a critical judge of her own society。 As Henry Bonell asserts Austen’s style is simple but not naive, her themes are profound and not superficial; her language is satirical but not above sincerity and good humour。 Thus, Austen is different from her contemporary women writers because she does not passionately identify herself with any of her characters and none of her books are written in the first person。 Rather than employing a kind of strong imagination or sense of duty to the characters, she gives them an impersonal freedom (387)。 In other words, as Bonell states in another context in his article "Her Wonderful Charm”。 It is regarded that the voice of certain social types is heard through dialogues in Austen’s works。 Such a style conveys the message through conversations that are mostly established on every-day language and associations and this style has lead to a comparison of Austen and Shakespeare。 Lord Macaulay, a contemporary critic of Jane Austen, makes the following interpretation: Shakespeare has had neither equal nor second。 But among the writers who have approached the nearest to the great master, we have no hesitation on placing Jane Austen, a woman whom England is justly proud。 She has given us a multitude of characters, all in a certain sense, commonplace; all such as we meet everyday。 Yet, they are all perfectly discriminated from each other as if they were the most eccentric of human beings。 (qtd。 in Wright 18) They indicate the confirmation of Austen’s status in the literary field。 This confirmation comes from the profundity her works reveal and her special insight into the society she lived in。文献综述
