Feminist Ideas on Scarlett’s Fight against the Fate in Gone with the Wind,英语论文从女性主义角度看斯嘉丽与命运的抗争

Abstract Gone with the Wind is the most famous work of Margaret Mitchell, who is considered as an extraordinary woman novelist. Both literary critics and the readers have taken great interest in its unconventional heroine Scarlett O’Hara, whose unconventionality is shown in her personality of indomitability and independence. The image of Scarlett is brilliant for her rebellious character. She always insists on her principle to rebel and fight bravely against the seemingly predetermined life. This thesis mainly focuses on the feminist ideas in Scarlett’s contending for destiny, including her fight against the feudal ethics and the terrible natural environment. Also, it gives a brief introduction of the influence of Scarlett’s fighting spirit on modern women, which will enable people to draw inspiration from Scarlett’s awakening of feminism and prove Scarlett is increasingly maturing and in the end becomes a new Southern woman with perseverance. 55814

1. Introduction

Gone with the Wind is not only a famous human romantic masterpiece, but also a demonstration of the great and profound changes in the historical period, and meanwhile it is the declaration of the feminism. And Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. This famous novel occupies an important place in the history of twentieth-century American literature, however, it has been dismissed by most academic literary critics for being uneven, flawed, and conventionally written in an age marked by literary experimentation, and attacked by some cultural commentators as promulgating racist myths and undermining the very foundations of its basically feminist paradigm. Fortunately, this novel, as the best-seller of the twentieth century, stands the test of the time and continues to withstand its detractors.

It is generally recognized that the sense of rebellion against the predetermined destiny is one of the most valued qualities in human beings, which shows the courage and the will to change when facing difficulties and challenges. Feminism is a main character of this masterpiece, which is a series of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women. Its concepts overlap with those of women's rights. Feminism mainly focuses on women's issues, but due to the pursuit for gender equality, some feminists argue that women's liberation is a necessary part of feminism. Feminists are people whose beliefs and behavior are based on feminism. 从女性主义角度看《乱世佳人》斯嘉丽与命运的抗争:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_60179.html
