The Translation of Chinese Classic—A Case Study of the Translation of Esteem Of Sages in Mozi

Chapter OneIntroduction

1.1 Research Purpose and Research Questions

The translation of Chinese classics into English is a new branch of translation studies. Due to its specificity resulting from rich culture-loaded terms and its differences with the modern Chinese, more and more experts and scholars began to realize the importance of devoting to translating Chinese classics into English. Researches in this aspect reach to a new high. However, compared with the internationally-known masterpieces like The Analects of Confucius, Tao Te Ching and Menzi, Mozi has been in the situation of lacking a complete translation version, which leads to the difficulty for overseas readers to obtain a profound and overall comprehension over this great school. Now there are two representative published English version of Mozi, one is translated by Y. P. Mei, and the other is Burton Watson. However, as Professor Wang Hong claimed, Mr. Mei chose 36 chapters among the existing 53 chapters of Mozi, while Watson translated even fewer, only 14 chapters among the whole, both of which failed to reflect Mozi’s main idea comprehensively.(Wang, 2006, p. 56) So, it is fair to say that more attention should be paid to the study on Mozi against the background of the present emerging of Chinese classics translation. Because it is the bound duty of Chinese scholars to enable more overseas readers to gain a overall understanding on this unparalleled doctrine.

Put forward by Hans J.Vermeer of German Functionalist School in the late 1970s, Skopos Theory is now another influential trend in modern translation studies. The word “Skopos” comes from the Greek, meaning “aim” or “purpose”, which is used to stand for the purpose of translation behaviors. Skopos Theory claims that the goal of translation determines which strategy of translation should be in use. Vermeer put it very clear in Skopos and commission in translational action that skopos, as the optimal principle in translation, is of great significance to translation activities.
