The Harmony and Conflict Between Man and Nature
 in Moby Dick

I. Introduction

As one of the greatest American writers, Herman Melville who lived in the 19th century published the novel Moby Dick in 1851. This novel, through the mouth of a wandering young man named Ishmael, relates a story about the endless hunting and the relentless massacre under the leadership of Captain Ahab to take revenge on their old enemy “Moby Dick” in the sea.
Since human beings appeared, the relationship between man and nature has come into being. With the development of human society and nature, the relationship between human and nature has changed greatly. At the beginning of this century, through long-term evolution of the relative original dramatic, changes have taken place, conflict replaced harmony. These conflicts reflects mainly in the population, resources, environment and other issues. Moby Dick is widely recognized as one of the most representative works about the relation between man and nature. In the novel, the conflicts between human beings and whales are showed profoundly and obviously. Ahab abandons human reason and deals with the conflict between Moby Dick and himself through a brutal way. Ishmael shows great love to the whale. He is the only one who survived in the end due to his kindness inside. The death of Ahab, together with the survival of Ishmael, best illustrates that the harmony between man and nature is the most important factor that constitutes the harmonious human being existential space and also the ultimate redemption of the fate of human beings. 论《白鲸》中人与自然的和谐与冲突:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_39247.html
