A Study on the Translation Strategies of Chinese-specific Terms from the Perspective of the Skopos Theory; a case of the Government Work Report
Abstract: Chinese-specific terms are regarded as the carrier of the Chinese culture; the accuracy of the English translation exerts a great impact on the transmission of the Chinese culture. This thesis begins with the introduction of the concept and characteristics of the Skopos Theory and Chinese-specific terms by using the Citespace software, coming up with the bibliometric research on Chinese-specific terms, their development history and pioneering study of the expressions with Chinese characteristics through the combined use of the commonly used translation strategies which is summarized by Chinese-specific terms corpus. The main body of the thesis addresses the English translation of the "Government Work Report" from 2011-2015 by analyzing the means of translation applied. The author argues that "big words" with highly political features should be translated literally to make the translated version concise. With regard to Chinese-specific terms with profound cultural connotation, the original meaning should be retained as much as possible. For Chinese-specific terms with figurative meaning, it is better to adopt appropriate means of translation on the basis of the context or past practices. 38827

目的论视域下的中国特色词汇翻译策略研究——以《政府工作报告》为例
摘要：中国特色词汇作为中国文化的载体，其翻译的准确度影响中国文化的传播，本文首先梳理了功能目的论和中国特色词汇的概念及特点，利用Citespace软件，从中国特色词汇研究的文献计量角度入手，分析中国特色词汇翻译研究的发展历程及前沿热点，结合中国特色词汇语料库总结归纳常用的翻译策略，最后以2011-2015年《政府工作报告》为研究对象，进行具体的研究，得出对于极具政治政策性的“大词汇”可以采用直译的方式，简单明了；对于有较深文化内涵又想保留其原作意思的词汇可以采用套译的方法；对于具有比喻意义的中国特色词汇可以根据上下文或其历史采用意译的方法。

1 Introduction
The annual Government Work Report not only summarizes the achievements and shortcomings in the process of building socialism with Chinese characteristics in the past year, but also deploys the basic principles and policies of the state in the fields of politics, economy, science and education, culture and diplomacy in the next year. It is an authoritative channel for the Chinese government and outside world to understand each other. With the continuous expansion of foreign exchanges and the rising of China's international status, the “Government Work Report” has attracted worldwide attention. Therefore, the translation of the report is of great significance to China's development. However, the translation of the “Government Work Report” is quite difficult, because the report has distinct political features, which requires a high degree of accuracy and fidelity. Besides, the “Government Work Report” contains a large number of new words with Chinese characteristics.
