Hemingway and His Views on Love in A Farewell to Arms,

Abstract Ernest Hemingway, an American famous novelist and his works have a profound influence on American literature and even the 20th century literature. As a representative of the “Lost Generation”, the disillusionment brought by the war in A Farewell to Arms is expressed vividly. This disillusionment is mainly reflected in the changing attitude of the protagonist Henry towards love and war. Therefore, this paper concentrates on the analysis of the change of Henry attitudes toward love. It reveals that this changing process consists of four stages - from the love for the game to regard it as a drug to treat panic and loneliness, to be seen as whole life, and finally to realize that love is nothing. In addition, this research makes people understand the work and the changing process of love better. It also provides a different perspective for the studies of this work.

I. Introduction

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) is one of the most famous American novelist, short-story writer and essayist, whose deceptively simple prose style has influenced a wide range of writers.
Hemingway was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. His novel, A Farewell to Arms, is often regarded as his best artistic achievement. The book tells a story of a young American named Frederic Henry, he volunteered for service with the Italian army in World War I and fell in love with his English nurse, Catherine with whom he retreated from the Italian front.
Having escaped to Switzerland, they lived in harmony until the tragic end of her pregnancy, during which both Catherine and the child die. The book describes people’s life during and immediately after World War I, dealing with the life status of people influenced by the brutalities of war and exploring the eternal impact of war on the young generation both physically and psychologically.(Carlos 75) Much has been said about the prose style Hemingway used and a great debate has been waged over whether the novel is about machismo and the sex object.
However, A Farewell to Arms is a tragic love story which also manifests Hemingway's consciousness. In Hemingway's whole life, he experienced marriages with Agnes, Pauline, Martha and Mary. Two of them, Agnes and Pauline, exerted great influence in his attitude to the man-woman relationship in A Farewell to Arms.
