Abstract
Dubliners has attracted much attention ever since it was published. James Joyce puts its background in Dublin, his hometown, the capital city of Ireland. With the realistic and symbolic writing style, he manages to sketch the living status of Irish people under the British colonial government at the end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The reason for Joyce’s choice of using images as his writing techniques, on the one hand, is because that a lot of writers back to that time are deeply influenced by Ezra Pound as well as Imagism; on the other hand, it is because of Joyce’s difficulties in publishing the book as it was considered as a violation to Irish Church and the British oppressor. Thus, Joyce has to make adjustments to his work by using “scrupulous meanness” and images as his writing technique to express the darkness of Irish society in a more oblique way. The images with profound meanings run through the entire body of Dubliners, hence greatly enhances the inner harmony and unification of this work.
This thesis aims to give a fully detailed study on the images reflected in Dubliners, especially the “light” image and the “window” image, which are very representative images and can be found repeatedly in stories like The Sisters, Araby and Eveline, etc. The analyses, made from an imagistic writing point of view, are intended to enhance readers’ understanding of the moral paralysis as the theme of Dubliners.
Meanwhile, this paper is targeted at exploring the practical significance of Dubliners as Joyce’s warning to his countrymen to fight against the oppressive British government and the corrupted Irish Church. This revolutionary work not only symbolizes Joyce’s farewell to the traditional literature but will keep on inspiring the following generations both at home and abroad as a manifesto of reformation and innovation.
