In the process of understanding the dialogues, the theory of conversational implicature and the cooperative principle will be reviewed. The main plot of Pride and Prejudice and the conversations in this novel will also be employed to apply to the analysis. On account of limited study in this paper, the author’s main efforts will lie in the following studies: the explanation of the conversational implicature theory, which includes the theory of conversational implicature, the characteristics of it, cooperative principle and four maxims of CP; and the study of conversations in this novel, explicitly from CP so as to have a try to analyze the personality of the characters.
The paper is intended to cover five chapters including the introduction and conclusion.
In chapter one, basic introductions will be presented, including the general statement and the structure of the whole paper.
In chapter two a detailed study on Jane and her Pride and Prejudice will be presented. These involve a brief introduction of Jane Austen and the whole plot of the novel Pride and Prejudice.
As for chapter three, the related theories will be stated. The theories include conversational implicature theory and the cooperative principle which are very important to the following analysis of Pride and Prejudice.
In chapter four, there comes to the case analysis in Pride and Prejudice based on the theory of conversational implicature and the cooperative principle. Through exploring how these characters violate the conversational maxims, the implied meanings of the speeches and the personality of each character can be clearly seen.
The last chapter comes naturally to the conclusion. The author will summarize the whole paper, and then give a proper ending on the study of Pride and Prejudice.

II. Studies on Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice

2.1 A Brief Introduction to Jane Austen
Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the few most celebrated English woman novelists in the 19th century. Her works are quite widely read and she is voted to be one of the most beloved writers in English literature. In all her immediate life, Austen has completed six novels which include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger-Abbey and Persuasion which mainly focus on the woman’s marriage and the squire life. She depicts the small world around her with woman’s unique nuanced observation and humorous and vivid words. She creates a large number of characters and opens the climax of realistic novels in the 1930s, so she can be called the pride of Britain. Almost every one of her six novels has a simple plot, clear style, and a light personality of the characters. Even until now, Jane Austen’s works are still widely read around the world, and she is still one of the most favorite female writers at present. In 2000, BBC held a Millennium Writers Award Activity. Finally, Jane Austen was voted to be the second one just followed Shakespeare. 会话含义理论下《傲慢与偏见》中的对话分析(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_30785.html
