 Abstract
The Little Prince is a literature work, which has a special status in the European literary palace in 20th century. Since the publication of this book, it has always been convinced that there is something significant behind the big work so that more and more scholars are addressing themselves to study it from different perspectives, namely symbolism, the philosophy of life, existentialism and appreciation etc. It is not an ordinary fairy tale, but rather a philosophical fairy tale, which contains the author's thinking of love and responsibility. Based on the analysis of characters in this novel, the thesis deeply explores aspirations and interpretations for love, which the author tries to express, and analyzes the essence represented with love and responsibility in The Little Prince. Taking the responsibility to realize the value of being a human being finds its full expression in The Little Prince. So it’s of great importance to explore love and responsibility in such a society lacking in human touch.
The methods employed in this thesis are as follows. Firstly, several thorough readings of this book is significantly necessary. Through readings, some metaphors and deeper meaning will be gradually emerged in this seemingly not so profound book. Secondly, books, journals and data related to the thesis shall be searched, collected and sorted from the library and on the internet. Thirdly, all kinds of comments, quotes, literary works should be analyzed. Finally, with the aid of materials, reference books and journals collected from the library and the internet, the typical figures will be analyzed to reveal the subject of the thesis.
Upon the analysis of the love and responsibility, a general thesis may arrive at the conclusion that love takes responsibility. In other words, love means responsibility, which is supported by main ideas that love is the courage to question, and love is to contribute but not to possess. Moreover, responsibility makes great love.
By studying this novel, my integrated language competence and literature appreciation competence has improved . And I have gained a good understanding of love and responsibility .
