3。1 Jane Eyre’s rebellions

Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte, is a famous English novel, whose main character, Jane, is such a brave, intelligent girl that she dares to rebel against inequality and oppression。 Her rebellions could be roughly classified in three stages。文献综述

Firstly, at Gateshead, as an orphan adopted by her aunt Mrs。 Reed, Jane is bullied and oppressed by Mrs。 Reed and her daughters, especially her son John Reed, who is obnoxious, a fat, greedy and bothersome naughty boy。 He often beats and offends Jane for no reason。 Young as Jane is, she is courageous enough to hit back。 As a result, she is locked into the red room。 Angry and frightened, she considers that she should resist all the way。 To her, there is a new thing。 Bessie and Miss Abbot have bad opinions about her。 She knows that her temporary resistance has incurred penalties, which makes her desperate (Bronte 2011)。 She believes that she is treated unjustly and she should resist for justice。 Otherwise, she prefers to die。 That is the first rebellion of Jane。

The second revolt is at the charity school, Lowood Institution。 Unwilling to raise Jane, Mrs。 Reed sends her to the institution, where she meets the second oppressor in her life, Mr。 Brochlehurt。 As the headmaster of the school, he is cruel。 He deceptively tells Miss Temple that he intended to raise these girls with hardy and patient instead of habits of luxury and indulgence。 They deserved bad or dull food and leftovers rather than delicious bread and cheese, which could help these girls develop good habits (Bronte 2011)。
