Abstract The thesis analyzes the reasons of miserable fate of Ben in The Fifth Child from the perspective of close reading。 The thesis is composed of four chapters。 Chapter one simply introduces Doris Lessing and her works。 Then, it tells main characters of the book and the study significance。 Chapter two presents the study at home and abroad on The Fifth Child。 Chapter three mainly analyzes Ben’s relationship with the others which is the reason that he goes into the wrong way。 Chapter four concludes Ben’s sufferings and appeals others to pay more attention to those children who suffer from unfair treatment。 92582
Through the analysis of Ben’s unfortunate fate, people will get a better understanding of factors a child needs in his growth process and how to treat the outcast of our society in a correct way in an ordinary life。

Doris Lessing is considered as one of the greatest female writers in the 20th century and in 2007 she was rewarded the Nobel Prize for Literature which is the highest award in literature field。 Her works are often concerned with female survival and the hard search for self-identity。 In her opinion, she thinks her heroines are a typical symbol of the disappeared women in western society in the early times of 20th century。 However, Doris Lessing herself does not hold the view that she is a novelist who pays much attention to feminism and politics while lots of critics of modernism and feminism see her as their representative。 One of her masterpieces The Grass Is Singing can be easily found the evidence that reflects her feminism and postcolonial viewpoint which she once talked about in her biography “t[T]he topics they usually talked about was always about British current affairs,African situations and issues of race。”(Lessing skin 19)。 《第五个孩子》中主人公班的悲惨命运之探究:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_200278.html
