3。 Language Features of Translation in English Cosmetic Instruction

     The language features of English cosmetic introduction are different from the ordinary specification。The characteristics in the language are pided into two aspects:syntactic features and lexical characteristics。

3。1 Syntactic features     

3。1。1 Flexible use of imperative sentence

      Imperative sentences are often used in specifications because they are more powerful and direct when made explanations。What’s more,the agents think that imperative sentences are more easier to attract readers and consumers。Therefore,the subjects of many statements are omitted and avoid to be indicated and ordered in order to shorten the distance between consumers and products。 For examples:

(1) To use:Apply each morning and evening after cleansing。Press the pump 3 times to saturate a cotton pad and wipe gently over face。

清洁后每天早晚各用一次。按压三次以上浸泡化妆棉并轻轻擦拭脸部

(2) Caution:Keep out of reach of children。(Shi 94-96)

注意点:请将本品放在儿童不能接触的地方 

3。1。2 Wide use of elliptical sentence 

     The basic requirement of cosmetic introduction is clear and concise。In order to attain this goal,translators often use elliptical sentences。The objects are omitted in specifications,but it’s not hard to understand。On the contrary,this can save space。Omitting the objects is necessary for introductions which are written on the packaging or counter。In this case,the specifications seem not to be serious,but it can make consumers warm and relax。Examples are as follow:

(1) Clinically proven,mildness。临床证明,温和。

(2) For all skin types。适合所有肌肤。(Shi 94-96)

3。2 Lexical features 文献综述

3。2。1 Substantial use of commendatory adjectives 

     Although cosmetic introductions are different from advertisements,they need to have transference and effects of encouragement。Therefore,cosmetic specifications often use some colorful evaluative adjectives to show fine quality and special efficacy in order to win the psychological recognition of consumers and establish a product good image。Such as:soft(柔软的)、translucent(透明的)、effective(有效的)、flawless(无暇的)、refined(精致的)、transparent(白皙的),protective(给予保护)and etc。。。These adjectives have good meanings and quickly seize the women’s psychology of skin health and beauty,thus achieving advertising effect。What’s more,adjectives also are used the forms of comparative and superlative。For example:

L’Oreal Triple Whitening Tenor。 欧莱雅三重柔肤水

Day after day,your skin is brightened,smoother and more translucent。(Meng 65-66)

日复一日,您的皮肤更亮,更光滑,更半透明。

3。2。2 Common use of specialized vocabulary 

     With the development of science and technology,cosmetics develop as well。These terminologies are from medicine,chemistry,biology and etc。For examples:Eye-shadow(眼影)、Tenor(柔肤水)Cream(面霜)、Mascara(睫毛膏)、Foundation(粉底)、Essence(精华素)、Powder puff(粉扑)、sun-lock lotion (防晒乳)and etc。。。In addition,there are some words from other industries,such as herbal essence(中草药精华),NMF,ginseng(人参)。(Wang 172-175)
