1。 Introduction

The Great Gatsby is one of Fitzgerald’s most famous novels, and it is widely considered to be a literary classic and a contender for the title "Great American Novel。" Written in 1922-1925, the story is set up in the aftermath of the First World War。 It seems that the story is about a love tragedy of Gatsby, but in fact it reveals a real life in 1920s in America, a life imbued with a hedonistic mood, also it “gives expression to a mood of disillusion with the institutions of society and despair at its loss of values”(Parkinson 18)。  源G于J优L尔V论N文M网WwW.youeRw.com 原文+QQ75201`8766

The Great Gatsby has long been praised in all respects over the decades since its publication, and this essay will focus on the characteristic of impersonality in it。 This theory can be traced back to Flaubert and James, both of whom are the founders of the theory of modernist novel。 Flaubert thought a novelist should be an all-knowing God, while James put emphasis on authenticity of the art of novel and immediacy in the process of dramatic presentation(Shen 115)。 And in The Great Gatsby, we can find this feature from two main perspectives。

To establish the viewpoint above, the body of this essay will be pided into three parts。 First, the definition of impersonality will be introduced, which is mainly based on James’s interpretation of this theory。 Next, the feature of impersonality will be examined from two main aspects, one is from techniques, which contains two layers─ the author’s relation to the narrator and the narrator’s relation to the story; the other is from emotional expression, that is, the application of irony, which covers up author’s real intention to avoid direct expression。 Examples from this novel will also be included。 Then, according to the analysis, functions and some problems of impersonality in this novel will be discussed in the third part。 Lastly, a conclusion is to be drawn。  从叙事学角度分析《了不起的盖茨比》中的非人格化特征:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_199592.html
