Comment on the cannibalism in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road

1.2 The Road
The Road is written by American writer Cormac McCarthy in 2006. The novel depicts a post-apocalyptic world. Everything was enveloped dilapidated atmosphere, and gray is the maintone of the novel. But we can still find some colorful pictures of old days in the novel, which is presented by the scenes that the father recalled the good times with his wife. The time is wonderful and colorful because of love and warmth. When it is extinguished, dark and cold will come. In the novel, it is not only natural disasters , but also the loss of love among human beings that caused the apocalypse(Michael, 2010, p.48-50). Indifferent heart, selfish human nature makes people eating people a common thing. It is also because of the loss of love during the apocalypse, which makes the apocalypse caused by nature more horrible, finally turns a former beautiful world into a man-made apocalypse. People are suspicious of each other, and kill each other. The apocalypse has led to the doomsday of love. The father and the son overcome many difficulties to travel across the ruins of the civilization ahead to the beach to find a better place to survive after an unspecified cataclysm that has destroyed almost all life on Earth in the intervening years (Cusher, 2014, p.223-230) . The novel was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 2006.
