2。1 Zhu’s “Charm” Theory

Since Yan Fu’s principle was put forward, the Chinese interpreters who firmly advocated this principle gradually pided into two fraction。 Some of them emphasized the essentialness of “faithfulness”, viewing that being faithful to the original text as the most important part; while the others held the view that interpreters should put stress on the “elegance”, considering the fact that the translated works were for the domestic readers。 And Mr。 Zhu is exactly among the later ones。

Based on Yan Fu’s principle of “faithfulness”, “expressiveness” and “elegance”, combining with his own comprehension, Mr。 Zhu put forward his “Charm” theory。 He thought that every culture has its own “charm”, and it is quite important to retain the “charm” of the original language during the interpretation。 His theory was not saying that faithfulness is not fundamental, but that not necessarily sticking to the original texts where the language collisions come, especially when the two different grammars of the languages were involved。 Only by doing so can the deep meanings be shown to the other culture’s readers。

By contrast, Mr。 Liang was one of those who approve of the significance of the faithfulness。 He came up with his own theory of “retain the true feelings”。 By sticking to the original texts, the interpreter should present the true meaning and feeling of the original contents。 The interpreted language was close to the origin language。 He tried to arise readers’ interests in other languages and apprehend the connotation by their own imagination
