1。 Introduction

1。1 A Brief Introduction to the Novel

As the fourth novel, The Bonesetter’s Daughter has continued the success of Amy Tan’s previous novel The Joy Luck Club since its publication in 2001。 The Joy Luck Club is Amy Tan’s first novel, and her most well-known work, which has been 1989 New York Times bestseller and has been translated into 35 languages。 The book drew lavish praise from the literary critics。 “For Tan, the true keeper of memory is language, and so the novel is layered with stories that have been written down–by mothers for their daughters, passing along secrets that cannot be said out loud but must not be forgotten,” commented by The New York Times Book Review。  Like much of Tan's work, nowadays, Amy Tan has been one of the representatives in Chinese American literature。 Under the background of American society that advocates cultural persity, she has been recognized as one of the best-known leading writers in America even in the western world。

The novel mainly deals with the relationship between an American-born Chinese woman and her immigrant mother。 The Bonesetter’s Daughter can be pided into three parts。 The first part is about the life of Ruth, a Chinese-American woman who works as a ghost writer living in San Francisco。 She fell into depression because of the unsatisfactory relationship with her boyfriend Art after more than ten years of cohabitation。 Moreover, she worries that her elderly mother, LuLing, is gradually becoming more and more demented。 LuLing seems increasingly forgetful, and makes bizarre comments about her family and her own past。 At the same time, Ruth begins to realize that the lost part in LuLing’s memory plays an insignificant role in understanding of her mother’s life, answering the question why they have been love and hate each other for years, and solving the problem in her own life。  In the second part, LuLing tells the story of her life before embarking on the land of America in the first person。 This part resonates with the fortunes of a huge clan who had been inkstick makers for six centuries, the discovery of skull of Peking man,the miserable life of Precious Aunt, the mother of LuLing。 The story mainly focus on how LuLing and her sister GaoLing survived in the war and family tragedies and how they went to America after all sorts of trials, leaving everything in china behind。 Several years earlier, LuLing wrote out her life story in Chinese。 The narrator of the last part returns to Ruth。 Ruth arranges to have the document translated and learns the story about her mother's life in China。 Reading to the document, she understands and forgives her mother and reflects on her own characteristic, which leads to the reconciliation with her boyfriend and her mother。 In the end of the story, LuLing starts a twilight romance with Mr Tang and says sorry to her daughter。 Inspired by LuLing and Precious Aunt, Ruth started to write her own story instead of writing for others。论文网 《接骨师之女》中的家庭观分析(3):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_178197.html
