2。1 World Englishes

Incipiently, English is the mother tongue of Britain; however, with globalization, English is used as a lingua franca by many countries in the world and becomes the common heritage of all the countries in today’s world。 Meanwhile, the fast localization of English leads to different varieties of English which have different regional and cultural features。 Thus, the phenomenon creates a new term named World Englishes, first appearing in Barbara M。H。 Strang's A History of English。 The striking growth of World Englishes arouses great interests in the field of linguistics; thus, many scholars do researches from the perspective of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, language and culture, etc。

In 1985, Kachru developed The Three-circle Model of World Englishes and it remains one of the most influential models for grouping the varieties of English in the world (Mollin, 2006)。 Kachru (1985) described the spread of English in terms of three concentric circles: the Inner Circle, the Outer Circle and the Expanding Circle。 These circles represent “the type of spread, the patterns of acquisition and the functional domains in which English is used across cultures and languages” (Kachru, 1985)。 The inner circle represents the original parts of English: the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and some of the Caribbean territories。 The English speakers in the inner circle are as more as 385 million, of whom 125 million are outside the United States。

The outer circle includes countries where English is not the mother language。 However, they use English as an official language for some historical reasons, and English plays an important role in the nation's institutions。 India, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia are in this circle。 The population of English speakers in the outer circle is counted to ranging from 145 million to 305 million。

Finally, the last circle is expanding circle, which encompasses those countries where English plays no official role, but where it is nevertheless widely used as a foreign language。 This includes much of the rest of the world's nations: China, Russia, Japan, most of European nations, Korea, Egypt, Indonesia, etc。 The number of language users in this circle is the most hard to estimate, mainly because English may be employed for specific, limited purposes, especially business English。 The estimates of these users range from 100 million to one billion。文献综述 国际经济新闻中的“中国英语”词汇特征研究(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_124352.html
