A Study of Subtitle Translation of Da Vinci's Demons from the Perspective of Functionalism

Abstract Films subtitle refers to the dialogue showed in movies or TV plays in character form。 The dialogue, or the subtitle, is presented in the bottom of TV, showing the speech content, and it can help the audience who are weak in listening。 86957

There are five main features of subtitle that differ from the written language: listening, comprehensiveness, instantaneity, popularity and absence of note。 The earliest study could trace back to the late of 1950s。 Traduction et Ciném, published in the magazine Le linguiste, is regarded as the start of subtitle translation。

In late 1970s, German Functionalist School emerged。 They paid attention to the context, not the text。 Functional Category of Translation Criticism, Skopos Theory, Theory of Translation Action and Function plus Loyalty are the main theories of functionalism, and the skopos theory is the kernel。 

The author chooses the TV play Da Vinci's Demons as the object of study。 Researchers of Functionalism were more interested in the description of the function of the translation works in the target culture, not the description of the translation works。 Under the guidance of functionalism, this paper mainly introduces the translation strategies in the translation of Da Vinci's Demons, such as omission, amplification, substitution and literal translation。

This paper tries to study this problem from the macroscopic angle under the guidance of functionalism。 I hope this paper can help improve the translation theory of movie subtitles。

功能理论视角下的字幕翻译研究——以《达芬奇的恶魔》为例

摘  要字幕翻译指的是出现在电视或者电影上的对白。字幕一般呈现于底部,显示对话内容。它能帮助弱听力的观众理解作品。

字幕不同于书面语言的五个特点--瞬间性、及时性、大众性、聆听性以及无注性。最早的字幕研究可以追溯到二十世纪五十年代晚期。发布在杂志Le linguiste的一篇文章Traduction et Ciném被看做是字幕翻译的开端。

在二十世纪七十年代末,德国功能理论学派出现。领军人物包括赖斯、佛米尔、曼特瑞以及诺德,他们的理论分别是文本类型理论、目的论、翻译行为理论和功能加忠诚理论。功能研究者感兴趣的并非是翻译作品本身,而是它们在目的语社会文化中的功能描写,研究重点是语境而非文本。赖斯的文本类型学在翻译批评和评估方面产生了较大的影响。佛米尔的目的论是整个功能理论的核心,根据目的论,所有翻译遵循的首要法则就是“目的法则”:翻译行为所要达到的目的决定整个翻译行为的过程,即结果决定方法。这些理论相互联系,互为补充。

本文选择美剧《达芬奇的恶魔》作为个案研究对象,在功能理论的指导下,讨论本剧的字幕翻译所采取的多种翻译策略,比如省译法、增译法以及归化法等,以确保字幕的连贯顺畅。从中我们可以看出,相对于严格的直译,采取恰当的意译方法效果更好,不仅能传递出源语所要表达的意思,而且还符合译语受众的语言习惯,达到了“忠实、通顺”的目标。
