Androgyny: Reflection of the Spirit of the Age in Orlando

Title:   Androgyny: Reflection of the Spirit of the Age in Orlando
Abstract
Virginia Woolf’s literary works are abundant in the description of human being’s inner world and unconsciousness, which are coincident with Freudian psychoanalysis. This essay, by taking Woolf’s Orlando as an example, begins with the textual analysis of the formal structure of the novel. Then it goes further to analyze the novel in terms of Freudian concepts. Finally, Woolf’s personal experience is examined in order to prove that the author’s sexual ambivalence is unconsciously reflected in the novel. Orlando is treated to a full paragraph of selfhood and the fullest expression of her alternating personality. This paper expects not only to shed new light on the novel itself but also probe into the relationship between Virginia Woolf’s literary creation and Freudian psychoanalysis. Meanwhile, I will employ Freud’s psychoanalysis to explore Woolf’s Orlando’s spirit of the times and the era. It will give us a deeper understanding of Woolf’s works and contemporary feminist literary criticism as the founder for historical significance.

 1. Introduction
Orlando is a young noble man with beautiful face and tender feelings. He is born in an aristocratic family and is fond of nature and poem. At the same time, he is often eager to fight in the battle like his ancestors. At the age of sixteen, he becomes a minion of Queen Elizabeth I and receives a lot of largess. After Queen's death, Orlando falls in love with the Russian Princess, Sasha, at a winter carnival during the Great Frost of 1604. He plans to elope with her, but Sasha escapes with a soldier in the darkness. After being abandoned by Sasha, Orlando returns to his manor and soaks himself in writing.
Unfortunately, his works are satirized by a mean writer named Nicky Green. Disappointed both in love and poem, Orlando blocks himself and determines to spend the rest of his life with animals and nature. But this aspiration vanishes by the Archduchess who pursues him passionately. In order to escape from her, Orlando accepts the ambassadorship to Turkey. In Constantinople, Orlando changes his gender after having slept for seven days and remains a woman throughout the rest of the novel. After a temporary period living with gypsy, Orlando returns to England. There she has experienced the joy and frustration of being a woman. But literature is her ultimate pursuit. She has equipped with 18th famous writers, such as Swift, Pope and Addison. At first, she feels very happy and pleasant, but later she finds these great men are ordinary people and actually have many defects. This plot arouses Orlando's self-discovery as an independent woman writer. Then time goes into 19th century-the age of Victoria. Orlando gets married with a squire according to the spirit of the age and is able to finish her poem after that. Entering into 20th century, her poem "The Oak Tree" which takes nearly 400 years' time is published and makes Orlando a famous woman writer. At last, the story ends on 11th October, 1928, the same day as the book is written. The deliberately fanciful story mainly traces the adventures of Orlando, from the late 16th century to the present day, from a boy to a woman, and provides a history of the development of women writers in England and the informal literary history of England during these years. 雌雄同体《奥兰多》中时代精神的体现:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_12014.html
