Abstract It has been widely accepted that metaphor acts as one of the figures of speech in linguistics and coexists with simile and metonymy。 Linguists both at home and abroad, in particular those rhetoricians, have been devoted in the exploration of this field。 The concept of metaphor has been put forward by Aristotle, an ancient Greece philosopher, in his Poetics, which could be traced back to about 2000 years ago。 In his works, also the significance of metaphor upon literature has been illuminated。 Aristotle has pointed that the capability of identifying metaphor is a token of genius。 With the passage of time, metaphor has since then captured widespread attention。86240

In 2001, Yann Martel’s novel Life of Pi ignited people’s concern and won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction and the Hugh Lennan Prize for Fiction in 2002 and German Book Prize in 2004。 Then in 2012, the novel Life of Pi was adapted to a 3D film by the famous director Ang Lee。 Both the novel and movie not only present a thrilling adventure story, but also trigger heated debate over the issue of humanity and barbarity。 There are various symbols in the novel having different implications and profound significance, like the background, the words and activities of the characters — Pi, Pi’s father, Pi’s mother, the Bengal tiger and so on。  This dissertation is aiming to tentatively explore the significance of the issue from the perspective of rhetoric in terms of metaphor。 It exposes the metaphors of every character under the background of the religious culture。 Therefore, the characters and the theme can be well grasped, in order to introspect what life is about。

《少年派的奇幻漂流》中的隐喻分析

摘  要众所周知，隐喻是中国语言学比喻修辞中的一种，它与明喻和借喻相较而存。中国的语言学家们，尤其是修辞学家们对此深入研究；而西方早在两千年前，古希腊哲学家亚里士多德就在他的作品《诗学》中提出了隐喻的概念，并提到在文学作品中隐喻的使用至关重要。亚里士多德还认为，具有辨别隐喻的能力是天才的标志。随着时间的流逝及文学的发展，人们对于隐喻愈加地重视。

在2001年，扬·马特尔的小说《少年派的奇幻漂流》引发了人们的关注并得到了2002年英国布克文学奖和2004年德国图书奖。之后在2012年，李安改编的同名3D 电影又为我们带来了视听盛宴。小说和电影不仅为我们呈现了一个精彩的冒险故事，还引起了人们对于人性和兽性的热烈争议。小说背景,其中的人物——派、派的父亲、派的母亲的言行,孟加拉虎等各具意蕴，象征意义也颇为深刻。本篇论文即试图从修辞的隐喻角度出发，讨论该主题的象征意义，揭露了小说中宗教文化笼罩下各个角色的隐喻，从而更好地理解各人物形象和小说主题，从而借此来反思人生的生命价值和意义。
