II. Comprehensive Discussion of Body Language
2.1 The Definition of Body Language
About the meaning of body language, different people hold different views. Some people think that body language is famous for non-verbal behavior. It spreads information by nod, eye contact, gesture and so on, and is applied in people’s communication. Other people hold the view that body language is gestures, movements and facial expressions that people use to communicate with others. According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary, body language is expressing the feelings of people by these ways that one person sits, stands and moves. Although expressions about body language have a variety of ways, they all agree body language is an important way in helping verbal communication. So we need to pay attention to it and put it into English teaching, especially in primary school English teaching.
2.2 The Classification of Body Language
1. Facial expressions
In our daily life, there are many approaches to express our standpoints. But many people deem that facial expressions are an acknowledged good way. When we communicate with others, their attitudes, feelings …, all of these can be judged by their facial expressions. So as a teacher, if you want to have a good classroom atmosphere, you need to use facial expressions. If you want to increase your English teaching result, you need to make use of facial expressions. If you want to keep pace with times, you need to take advantage of facial expressions. When teachers ask students to answer questions, they can use body language to reflect students’ answers. When students answer teachers’ questions, whether their answers are correct or not, teachers need to use smile as a reply. The reason is that smile is a good helper in helping teachers to enhance students’ overall development. When students answer questions right, smile is an acknowledgement to them. If students answer questions wrong, smile is helpful for keeping their zeal. But if teachers give students adverse expressions, the effect will be different. Students will be disappointed to teachers and lose their interest in the subject. Therefore, smile is a good medicine for both students and teachers. As we all know, learning English is not easy, especially to the pupils just exposed to it. If teachers can give students smiles at the proper time, students will be relaxed rather than stressed. 小学英语教学中姿势语的使用(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_38836.html
