1.2 Introduction of The Joy Luck Club
The Joy Luck Club was published in 1989, the most obvious theme of the novel is about the relationships of Chinese women and their Chinese American daughters in the United States. The novel appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly a year and won her several renowned literary awards. The book has been translated into 25 languages including Chinese, and it was made into a big budget promoted Hollywood film from a screen play co-written by Tan in 1993. The novel describes the liberation of the people who moved overseas from mainland China to the United States. This book has two systems of mothers and daughters, both of which have a very good response. The book not only has kept the original translation of the witty humor and the United States, but also has met the reader’s reading habits. Reading this book, we ordinary people not only understand the mentality and the concept of Chinese-American, the mother’s painful fates and the growth of her daughter’s life experiences, but also feel the different culture between Chinese and American. Though the mothers of the first generation of immigrants have been in the foreign, they still have the Chinese traditional in their mind. In the United States, the daughters, though looking very similar with the mother, are quite different from the values of the Chinese and the environment growing up. They have to personally bear the collision of two cultures and values. The mother and daughter both attach relative feelings deeply, and they love and hurt each other at the same time until they understand the other one. Mothers are in the war period, to flee from China to the United States. For them, it means to leave the troubled China and successfully escape from the absurd marriage and the hypocritical family and the miserable fate, In short, they finally set foot on the way to the United States, and have the boundless vision of a better life. The four daughters were born and raised in the United States. Their mothers show off to each other their daughters’ talents, but the daughter felt shameful and bored for the mother’s doings. In fact in the eyes of the mothers, daughters will always have endless fault, though they have tried their best to satisfy their mother. Mothers hope that their daughter can fit in the American society, and meanwhile not lose their Chinese character. So the mothers cavil the small freckle face of the future son-in-low, the room’s layout not well, and the daughter become to making the white chocolate cake which she never like ever. All the mother’s cavils are an injury to the daughter’s heart. Until the adult daughters have experienced some indecision and thinking of life, daughters may know their mothers was trying to protect them, and never want to hurt their care and thought. The Joy Luck Club is not only the place for Chinese women to play mahjong, but also a place to have meals together and chat with each other about memories of those years they were young, it hold the women’s beautiful wishes. 浅析《喜福会》中的女性主义(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_18492.html
