2.2.5 History Research
Taken as a whole, folk custom is a cultural creation and accumulation of history. And the accumulation is generally characterized by obvious hierarchy. Folk custom is also a living social fossil which records a nation’s development history, represents discursive shifts and laws of inheritance and development. In academic circles and social sciences researches, cultural anthropology, science of religion, sociology, folklore, folk literature, etc., which are carrying out thorough studies of folk custom as traditional culture and its social service capacity from different aspects, which, correspondingly, are facilitating academic prosperity and social sciences research further development.
Many ancient books had detailed and colorful descriptions about Long Mu life experience, geographical environment, historical background and lifestyle and customs, especially the tales about she and her five sons, which are valuable in studying culture of the ancient Hundred Yue tribes. From any kinds of Long Mu legends, we can understand certain significances that the relationship between human and object, the context of time and space, the motivation, intention, feeling, and value of human.
According to historical documents, Long Mu slept in a big wooden tray and carried by the current from the upper reaches of Xi River to Yue Cheng. In real life, people always think of folk customs as “history textbooks”, and make a considerable effort to pass on folk customs to their posterity by some ways or ceremonies, which so as to let them keep ancestor’s creations and merits in mind. Long Mu legend is so well known and so highly honored in locality.
As the traditional culture, Long Mu Cultural Faith has extremely significant research value and promotes our academic prosperity, cultural diversity, and social sciences’ development. 2.2.6 Education
The folk custom is a social and collective creation, and gradually runs deep in the life of people, thus it has a deep mass basis so do Long Mu Cultural Faith in the South China.
The naissance of faith custom at first always includes certain purposes of reward, namely, it relates with the education service capacity. In modern society, people always educate themselves and others traditional thinking and culture through rich and varied folk-custom activities. And the excellent custom culture could mould people's temperament, help them to distinguish between the true, the good and the beautiful and the false, the bad and the ugly, cultivate people healthy, honest morality, encourage people live a life filled with happiness and warmth. Long Mu has moral good to people and signal feat the country, so that’s why she could become the object of faith. And the posterity holds ceremonial activities so as to let the local people know Long Mu merits well, at the same time, what they have done subtly could help people have sense of pride, then people would learn Long Mu spirit during their daily life. It’s undeniable that Long Mu Faith custom also exist ignorant and backward feudalistic superstition, so we should pay more attention to folk-reform and its influence on society while our society is making headway in the process of modernization.
