On the Translation Strategies of Oscar Wilde’s Fairy Tales,英语论文论王尔德童话的翻译策略

Abstract  Translation of fairy tales mainly serves the child readers.Translator should not only take the psychological and cognitive features of children into account but also flexibly deal with the transference of culture.Domestication should be adopted in the language form so that the text is readable and acceptable. Correspondingly, foreignization should be applied in conveying images of culture to create an exotic sense. In Oscar Wilde’s fairy tales, sharp contrast almost exists everywhere, namely beauty and ugliness, kindness and evilness, sympathy and indifference, sufferings and enjoyments; children can be educated through the contrast. This thesis sums up translation strategies for children’s literature by analyzing two Chinese versions of Oscar Wilde’s fairy tales.69105

1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the study

As a special branch of literature, children’s literature has its own features. However, compared with other genres, researches on children’s literature are far from enough.Consequently, little attention is paid on the translation of it.In retrospect, translation practice on children’s literature originated from the late Qing Dynasty. At that time, the official language was classical Chinese , making it hard for children to appreciate; translation practice on children’s literature came into stagnation .It is until the May 4th Movement when the vernacular language was widely applied that children’s literature emerged as an independent genre. As Guo Moruo, pioneer of China intellectual, pointed out on Children’s Literature, “One of fundamental steps of reforming society is to reform its citizens and their complete reform should start with that of children Childrens’book bear the responsibility to enlighten kids unconsciously”(Guo Moruo, 1922 ).In Talk on Literature and Art , Ye Shengtao said, “For the sake of our beloved children and for the promising future of our country, it is of great urgency to create spiritual food for our children.”(Wang Quangen , 2000).With constant efforts of Ye Shengtao and Zhou Zuoren, there was a translation fever on children’s literature at that time .The May 4th Movement is considered as the China first boom in children’s literature translation. At that moment, the vernacular language was substituted with the classical Chinese, which is more readable to children.Since then, translation works on children’s literature have been flooded in China. 论王尔德童话的翻译策略:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_77825.html
