“垮掉的一代”是20世纪中期美国的一个文学流派，以艾伦•金斯伯格和杰克•凯鲁亚克等人为代表。杰克•凯鲁亚克的《在路上》被奉为“垮掉一代”的圣经，书中以作者亲身经历为原型记述一群青年驾车几次穿越美国大陆，一路高谈东方禅宗和追寻自由精神的旅程以及他们荒诞不经的生活经历，是对那一代人生活状态的完整体现。
迪安•莫里亚蒂是书中的核心人物，该角色形象鲜明，独具特色。他具备放荡不羁的性格，离经叛道的行为，却对生活充满热情，“垮掉”精神在其身上展现无遗，是那一代人最典型的代表。
本论文以迪安这一角色为落脚点，笔者通过深入阅读《在路上》和其他相关作品，并查阅大量资料、查找相关纪录片和影视资料，结合当时的政治、历史、文化背景，对该角色进行全面、多角度的人物分析，试图解析出是什么造就了迪安•莫里亚蒂，他在路上苦苦追寻什么，从而解读以他为代表的“垮掉的一代”。

Abstract
"Beat generation" is an American literary genre which rose in the middle of the 20th century, post-World War II period. Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac are representatives of this group. The novel On the Road was wrote by “the King of Beat Generation” Jack Kerouac and it was regarded as the Bible of the “Beat Generation”. In the book, Kerouac narrates a crazy journey of several young people crossed America by car which was based on his own experience between 1947 and 1950. It is a full representation of that generation.
Dean Moriarty is the core character in this novel. His Bohemian character, deviant behavior, and enthusiasm about life, show the "beat" spirit clearly. He is the most typical representative of the generation.
This thesis is a study of the character Dean Moriarty in On the Road. By referring to a good deal of literature and video material, considering different elements, such as political, historical, cultural, the author analyzed Dean Moriarty from comprehensive and multiple perspectives, tried to analyze what creates Dean from external and internal reasons, what was him searching for by setting out journeys ceaselessly. By doing these, we can also see the characteristics and spiritual demands of the "Beat generation".

1.1 A brief introduction of On the Road
On the Road is the second novel of American Beat writer Jack Kerouac, which was published by Viking Press in 1957, based on experiences of his first long road trip with his friends across America during the late 1940s. Jack Kerouac is called “the King of Beat Generation”, regarding his contributions to the group, especially this book, and some of his remarkable ideas about composition, for example spontaneous writing.
