I. Introduction

The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway’s masterpiece, was published in 1952, and won Hemingway the Nobel Prize in 1954. The novella tells a simple story of a broken old man Santiago alone ventures far out into the Gulf Stream and there catches the biggest marlin ever seen in those waters. Then alone and exhausted by his struggle to harpoon the giant fish, he is forced into a losing battle with marauding sharks, which leave him nothing but the skeleton of his catch. Finally, when he returns home with the skeleton, he wins respect of everyone. Through the description of the struggle among the old fisherman, the big marlin and the sharks, Santiago’s strong willpower in the face of adversity gets fully exposed. Hemingway gets many inspiration from the Holy Bible when creating his masterpiece.
As is known to all, the Holy Bible is not only the religious canon of Christianity but also a very important part of western culture. It exerts significant impacts to western civilization and literature. So if readers want to understand classics completely, they need to read the Holy Bible first. Almost all of western authors are affected by Holy Bible deeply, so is Hemingway and his The Old Man and the Sea. In the novella The Old Man and the Sea, readers can realize Hemingway’s religions complex and the great effects of the Holy Bible, which find expression not only in specific images but also in the moral aspect. Many scholars abroad and at home shows strong interest in this work, and they talk about the “code hero”, “nothingness thoughts”, “tragic consciousness” and his “iceberg theory”. And some have noticed the relationship between The Old Man and the Sea and the Holy Bible. Bert Bender’ essay Natural History in Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and Other Works aims at analyzing how Hemingway, in his important work such as The Old Man and the Sea, explores the inherent violence in sexual selection and the elemental need to kill and eat, often indicating how these biological imperatives undercut both idealized sexual “love” and belief in the Christian God (128). In China, Gao Yan’s study Brief Analysis of Biblical Style in The Old Man and the Sea, carries out a specific biblical study on the theme, word, language structure and writing techniques of The Old Man and the Sea (127). 《老人与海》的圣经阐释:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_39081.html
